Student Leadership Awards 2006

Each spring, Student Affairs honors students and registered student student organizations who have demonstrated exceptional leadership.

Student Affairs solicits nominations for the awards from all campus units including registered student organizations. The Selection Committees review the nominations and select the recipients based upon the established criteria for each award. These awards are presented at an awards reception on Saturday April 22, 2006. All recipients must be present to accept the honor and monetary award.

Nomination information:

The nominator must complete the nomination form below, including a short essay (not exceeding 300 words), and the student's resume of activities. Details are listed below. Nomination materials are due on Friday, February 17 by noon.

Student Leadership Award Details:

Student awards are categorized by class year, type of leadership, as well as other criteria. Awards range in amounts from $250 to $1,000. Anyone may nominate a student for any of the leadership awards. One person may make more than one nomination for any one award; however, no person may nominate a particular student for more than one leadership award.

SENIOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARDS
(for undergraduate students who will graduate by December 2006):
Excellence in Leadership Awards The Chicago Illini Club, Procter & Gamble, friends and family of Vicki Lynn Merkel, and the Willard Broom Leadership Fund sponsor four awards to recognize outstanding seniors.
The recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award. Recipients' names will be listed on a plaque in the Office of the Dean of Students and in the campus honors section of the commencement program.

  • How has the nominee made a significant impact on the quality of University life?
  • What programs and activities has the student been involved with that demonstrate his or her contributions to campus?
  • Why do you feel this person has demonstrated exceptional leadership on this campus?

  • Jean F. Hill Awards

    Two awards recognize exceptional seniors from underrepresented populations who have demonstrated outstanding campus leadership and overcome significant personal obstacles to earn their degrees.
    The recognition includes a $750 monetary award.

  • How has the nominee demonstrated leadership in his or her campus activities?
  • What significant obstacles has this person overcome during their college career?

  • JUNIOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARDS
    (for undergraduate students in their third year of attendance, financial need is a component for consideration):
    Irene Pierson Award
    One award recognizes an outstanding junior who has demonstrated excellence in student activities, leadership and academics. The recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award.
    Essay questions for nominator(s):
  • How has the nominee demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in his or her activities?
  • Being a well rounded student includes excelling in both the classroom and extra-curricular activities. Please describe the achievements of this student.

  • Barbara Seaquist Williams Leadership Awards Two awards recognize female juniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership while maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (A = 4.0). A successful nominee has made a significant positive impact on the quality of University programs, services and/or activities. A successful nominee has also shown creativity and community awareness in her work. The recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award.

  • How has the nominee created community awareness in her programs, services, and/or activities?
  • In what ways has the nominee made a significant impact on the quality of university life?

  • SOPHOMORE STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARDS
    (for students in their second year of attendance, financial need is a component for consideration):
    Joshua L. Grafton Scholarship Awards Two awards recognize undergraduate sophomores who have demonstrated outstanding creativity, initiative and potential in his or her extracurricular activities. Financial need is one component in consideration for selection. The recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award.

  • How has the nominee demonstrated initiative and creativity in his or her co-curricular activities?

  • ADDITIONAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARDS:
    Patricia E. Askew Leadership Awards One award is presented to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership on campus and who has been instrumental in creating or enhancing a registered student organization.  This will be the first year this award is presented and recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award. This award is for any undergraduate student and financial need is a component for consideration.

  • How has the nominee demonstrated exceptional student leadership on this campus?
  • What specific actions did this student take to create or enhance a registered student organization?

  • Mothers Association Humanitarian Service Awards Two awards are presented, one to an undergraduate and one to a graduate/professional student. A successful nominee has performed outstanding and innovative service within the local community.
    Each award includes a $250 monetary award and a $250 grant to an organization of the recipient’s choice.
    Essay questions for nominator(s):
  • What specific need has this student addressed in the community?
  • What innovative approach has this student used to address this need in the community?
  • Which community service organization should receive a monetary award of $250 and how should it be used?

  • Joseph H. Smith Award One award is presented to either an undergraduate, graduate or professional student or a registered student organization who has developed an effective and sustaining activity toward interracial or cultural understanding and appreciation through outside classroom experiences. The purpose of the award is to promote the educational value of racial/cultural diversity among students.
    The recognition includes a $750 monetary award.

  • How has the nominee or student organization worked toward creating effective cultural understanding?
  • What measures has the student or student organization put into place to sustain interracial and/or cultural understanding and appreciation?
  • What impact have the actions of the student or student organization had on campus outside the classroom?
  • Registered Student Organization Award Details:

    Student organization awards are based on impact to the campus community. Anyone may nominate a registered student organization for the Student Organization Awards. There is no limit to the number of organizations one person may nominate.

    REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATION LEADERSHIP AWARDS:

    T.I.S. Bookstore Outstanding Organization Awards

    Two or more awards are presented. The awards are presented to student organizations whose contributions and activities enrich the total quality of life on campus and within the local community. The award amount is determined based upon the proposed budget submitted. A representative from the student organization must be present to accept the honor and monetary award.
    Each award includes a $250 to $3,000 monetary award to the organization
    Essay questions for nominator(s):
  • Explain the organizations mission, how it is accomplished and highlight the group's activities and contributions to the campus during the past year. Discuss the organization's goals for the upcoming year.
  • Discuss the desired amount of the award and how the money might be used. Show a simple estimated budget.
  • Explain why this student organization, one of more than 1,000 on campus, is worthy of special recognition by this award.
  • Joseph H.
