Welcome to the nomination site for Student Leadership Awards for Student Affairs. Each spring Student Affairs honors students and registered student organizations who have demonstrated exceptional leadership. This is your opportunity to nominate a student or registered student organization (RSO) within the University of Illinois for their exceptional leadership. Students may also self-nominate. Please review the information to begin the nomimation process.

Nomination Information
Nominations for Student Leadership Awards are due Wednesday, February 13, 2008 by noon.
Nominations are welcome from all campus units including registered student organizations. These awards will be presented at an awards reception on Saturday, May 3, 2008. All recipients must be present to accept the honor and monetary award (students studying abroad will receive due consideration).
The following criteria is to be considered for the nomination process:
- You may nominate one student for one award category only.
- You may nominate more than one student.
- Students can self-nominate.
- Students can nominate other students and registered student organizations.

Award Information
Student awards are categorized by class year. Awards may be applicable to students of all academic levels. Awards range in amounts from $250 to $3,000. Anyone may nominate a student for any leadership award. One person may make more than one nomination for any one award; however, no person may nominate a particular student for multiple awards.

The Chicago Illini Club, Procter & Gamble, friends and family of Vicki Lynn Merkel, and the Willard Broom Leadership Fund sponsor four awards to recognize outstanding seniors. Recipients of the Vicki Lynn Merkel Award and the Willard Broom Award will also be recognized with a $1,000 monetary award. Recipients of the Chicago Illini Club Award and the Procter & Gamble Award will be recognized with a $500 monetary award.

- Describe how the nominee's contributions to campus and/or community life demonstrates exceptional leadership.
Two awards recognize exceptional seniors from underrepresented populations who have demonstrated outstanding campus leadership and overcome significant personal obstacles to earn their degrees. The recognition includes a $750 monetary award.
Essay Questions for Nominator(s):
- How has the nominee demonstrated leadership in his or her campus activities?
- What significant obstacles has the nominee overcome during their college career?
One award is presented to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership on campus. A second award will be presented to a student who has been instrumental in creating or enhancing a registered student organization. This will be the third year this award is presented and recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award. Any undergraduate student is eligible.

Two awards are presented to an undergraduate and a graduate/professional student who have performed outstanding and innovative service within the local community. Each award includes a $250 monetary award and a $250 grant to an organization of the recipient's choice.

- What innovative approach has the nominee used to address this need in the community?
- Which community service organization should receive a monetary award of $250, and how should it be used?
One award is presented to an undergraduate, graduate or professional student, or a registered student organization who has developed an effective and sustaining activity toward interracial or cultural understanding and an appreciation through outside-classroom experiences. The purpose of the award is to promote the educational value of racial/cultural diversity among students. The recognition includes a $750 monetary award.

- How has the nominee or student organization worked toward creating effective cultural understanding?
- What measures has the nominee or student organization put into place to sustain interracial and/or cultural understanding and appreciation?
One award recognizes an outstanding junior who has demonstrated excellence in student activities, leadership and academics. The recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award.
Essay Questions for Nominator(s):
- Describe in detail how the nominee has made a significant impact on the quality of campus and/or community life.
- Describe how the nominee's contributions to campus and/or community life demonstrates exceptional leadership.
- Please explain how the nominee excels in both the classroom and co-curricular activities.
Two awards recognize female juniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership while maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (A = 4.0). The successful nominee has made a significant positive impact on the quality of University programs, services and/or activities. This nominee has also shown creativity and community awareness in her work. The recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award.

- Describe how the nominee's contributions to campus and/or community life demonstrates exceptional leadership.
- Describe the nominee's volunteer activities and discuss how she has created community awareness in programs, community services and/or activities.
An award is presented to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership on campus and who has been instrumental in creating or enhancing a registered student organization. This will be the third year for this award and recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award. This award is for any undergraduate student.

Two awards recognize undergraduate sophomores who have demonstrated outstanding creativity, initiative and potential in their extracurricular activities. Financial need is one component taken into consideration for selection. The recognition includes a $1,000 monetary award.

Two or more awards are presented to student organizations whose contributions and activities enrich the total quality of life on campus and within the local community. The award amount is determined based upon the proposed budget submitted. A representative from the student organization must be present to accept the honor and monetary award. Each award includes a $250-3,000 monetary award to the organization.
NOMINATOR(S): Please use the same nomination form. Include past accomplishments under Part III. Also, please include the RSO budget.
Essay Questions for Nominator(s):
- Explain the organization's mission, how it is accomplished, and highlight the group's activities and contributions to the campus during the past year. Discuss the organization's goals for the upcoming year.
- Discuss the desired amount of the award and how the money might be used. Show a simple estimated budget.
- Explain why this student organization, one of more than 1,000 on campus, is worthy of special recognition by this award.

Nomination Form
OK, so you're ready to nominate an outstanding student or registered student organization.
- Open the Nomination Form and complete Part I: Student and Nominator Information.
- Select which award you are nominating the student for in Part II.
- Copy the "essay questions for nominator" that are listed under the specific award you are submitting. Paste the questions into Part II of the nomination form and type in your responses.
- Include the student's resume under Part III. For an RSO, list past accomplishments.
- Once the nomination form is completed, save it by naming it "(Student's) LastnameFirstname.doc," and email it as an attachment to vcsa@uiuc.edu.
SELF-NOMINATING: Students, if you're nominating yourself, the essay questions need to be completed by an advisor, professor, supervisor, or other student.
RSO NOMINATIONS: Please include the RSO budget.
The deadline for applications and materials is noon on Wednesday, February 13, 2008. The awards committee will review the materials and select recipients basd on the established criteria for each award.
NOTES:
• The nominee may be asked to come in for an interview or submit a short personal statement if selected as a finalist. If so, students will be notified between Feb 19 - 22, and are asked to complete the interview or personal statement by February 29. Because of this short time frame, please inform the student of this possibility so that they can be prepared.
• Class standing is determined by the number of credit hours a student has completed at the time of application: freshman = 0-29 credit hours; sophomore = 30-59 credit hours; junior = 60-89 credit hours; senior = 90 or more credit hours. A graduate student is currently earning credit towards a graduate degree.
