Welcome, Students! Welcome to the application site for ExCEL (Exemplary, Committed, & Engaged Leaders) Scholarships through Student Affairs. We are deeply pleased for your interest in this scholarship opportunity as a means to assist you financially through your college education. Please read the information provided below carefully, as it will help assist you in completing a successful application.
Application Requirements back to top The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs awards seven scholarships each year to students from all campus units who have demonstrated academic distinction and will assume a leadership position within a registered student organization for the 2007-08 academic year. Scholarships are offered in the amount of $1,500 and will be applied directly to the student's financial aid package ($750 per semester). Student applicants must fulfill the following criteria:
- Have junior or senior standing during the 2007-08 academic year
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (A = 4.0)
- Anticipate holding a major leadership role in a registered student organization during the upcoming school year
- Attain one letter of reference from an advisor, professor, or supervisor who can attest to the student's leadership capabilities and potential
NOTE: Additionally, student recipients must be available to attend an afternoon recognition event on campus on Saturday, April 21, 2007.
About ExCEL Scholarships back to top ExCEL Scholarships are endowed and named for the following:
- Stanley R. Levy served the University for over twenty-eight years until his retirement in 1996. During fifteen years as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Levy nurtured student leaders and their activities in unprecedented ways. Lunch Bunch, the Student Leadership Awards, and the Office of Volunteer Programs are just a few of the opportunities conceived and initiated during his tenure. These scholarships were established by alumni, former student leaders, and friends to honor Dr. Levy. Additional criteria for this scholarship is financial need.
- The Edith and Harry Darby Foundation was established to honor Senator and Mrs. Darby. Senator Darby received his bachelor's degree in 1917 and master's degree in 1929 from the University, both in mechanical engineering. While at Illinois, he served as junior councilman and then president of the Illinois union, an organization whose primary purpose was to raise funds for the construction of a union building. He was also a member of Sachem and served on several campus-wide committees. A minimum culmulative grade point average of 3.0 is also a requirement for this scholarship.
- Susan Teegarden Morrison was an alumnae of Illinois, receiving her bachelor's degree in journalism in 1959 and her master's degree in home economics in 1961. She was active as a student leader in many areas, including Mortar Board, Alpha Lambda Delta, Delta Gamma and several positions in student government. Her most distinguished student leadership position was serving as the first female president of the Illini Union Board.

The deadline for applications and materials is noon on Friday, February 16, 2007. The scholarship committee will review the applicants' materials and select recipients based on the established criteria for each scholarship.
