Awards
Private and corporate gifts reward students who show exceptional scholastic and/or leadership achievement. Award recipients exemplify the cultural and philanthropic diversity found on the Urbana campus. Student organizations that demonstrate exemplary service to the campus and community are also recognized. The University and Student Affairs are able to honor these students and organizations because of the generosity of alumni and friends. The contributions of award benefactors not only enable us to present these awards, but also serve to recognize the importance of fostering and providing leadership opportunities to all students at the University. Student Affairs requests nominations for the awards from campus units and registered student organizations; various award committees review the nominations, interview the candidates, and select the recipients. We acknowledge the countless students who are not selected as a recipient yet contribute daily to creating a vibrant and dynamic campus community. We also applaud the many other registered student organizations that provide rewarding opportunities for young leaders to emerge and grow. By contributing to an award, you can touch the lives of undergraduate students across campus. You may also choose to establish a new award fund, in your name or the name of a loved one.

2006 STUDENT LEADERSHIP RECOGNITION CEREMONY BOOKLET

A ONE-WOMAN DYNAMO Stephanie Sideman, a senior in speech communication and political science, has the uncanny ability to tackle the most challenging, knotty issues without losing her smile. But don't confuse the smile with a light-hearted approach…rather; understand the optimism and love it contains.
Stephanie is everywhere. Her sorority, panhellenic, student ambassadors, TEAM (Together Encouraging the Appreciation of Multiculturalism), Atius, Sachem, Boxes and Walls, coaching a youth soccer team, chairing the Student Organization Resource Board (SORF), and organizing a RSO Flag football tourney--just so people would meet each other. A one-woman dynamo, Stephanie received the Vicki Lynn Merkel Excellence in Leadership Award recently at the 2001 Student Leadership Awards luncheon.
A VISION AND A PLAN Senior Brandt Molitor developed a vision to build up and restore the library collections of public schools located throughout the entire state of Illinois. Headed by the College of Education's student group S.A.G.E., partnerships with 20 campus organizations have built the Illinois Library Book Drive into an incredible success story. Involvement of more than 3,800 University of Illinois students have donated $11,000 worth of new library books to 133 public schools during the last two academic years. These students have raised money, requested wish lists and personally delivered books. They have also developed a Read-A-Thon literacy event at local elementary schools. S.A.G.E. was one of the four student organizations to receive the T.I.S. Bookstore Outstanding Student Organization Awards.
