The ExCEL Scholarship Program
The ExCEL (Exemplary, Committed & Engaged Leaders) Scholarship
Program seeks to support undergraduate scholarships for active leaders
of major student organizations. Begun by alumni and friends of Stanley
R. Levy, this program has grown to eight named scholarships in honor
of Stanley R. Levy, Susan Morrison Teegarden, and Edith and Harry
Darby.
ExCEL Scholarship recipients must hold a significant campus leadership
position. Students are nominated by campus faculty, staff and other
students and are selected for consideration by a committee made
up of a member of Student Affairs Development and several alumni
who are past student leaders. Awarded each spring, recipients must
be of junior or senior standing during the coming academic year.
A minimum grade point average of 2.5 (A=4.0) is required.
A Personal Investment in the Student Leadership Scholarship Program
When you make a gift to the ExCEL Scholarship Program, you are forging
a personal link with tomorrow's leaders. The ExCEL Scholarships
create a legacy in that the donors are past student leaders providing
the financial means for current student leaders to continue to lead
strong student organization activities.
Sponsors may designate a group - including students from a particular
state or area, or students enrolled in a specific college or organization
- from which the student to benefit from their gift will be selected.
You can participate in the following way:
Gifts
of $30,000 or more allow you to establish a permanent endowment
in your name or that of a loved one. Such an endowment will fund
ExCEL Scholarships for students in perpetuity. With a gift at
this level, you also become a member of the University of Illinois
Foundation Presidents Council.
Gifts of $1,500 annually enable you to sponsor an ExCEL Scholarship
in honor or in memory of a family member or friend.
Gifts at any level will be used to build a permanent endowment
that will provide ExCEL Scholarships to qualified students.

Rio Kawai '02 and recipient of one of the two Susan Morrison
Teegarden ExCEL Scholarships, expresses his attitude well, "I
sing in the shower. Amidst my jolly tunes, I use that time to
set goals for myself..." Closing the gap between the university
and the community is one goal. Increasing awareness of community
diversity is the next step." Vice chair of Volunteer Illini
Projects, Inc. and site development co-chair of Alternative
Spring Break, Roi also takes time to serve as a soccer coach,
youth tutor and Boxes and Walls facilitator for a broad array
of programs. He has taken his love of volunteerism seriously,
changing his major from engineering to elementary education.
Roi hopes to have a little more spending money to buy drinks
for his soccer team and incentives for the youth he tutors. |
About
the ExCEL Scholarships' Named Donor and Individuals
Stanley
R. Levy served the University for over twenty-eight years
until his retirement in 1996. During fifteen years as Vice Chancellor
of Student Affairs, Dr. Levy nurtured student leaders and their
activities in unprecedented ways. Lunch Bunch, the Student Leadership
Awards and the Office of Volunteer Programs are just a few of
the opportunities conceived and initiated during his tenure. These
scholarships were established to honor him by alumni, former student
leaders, and friends. Two scholarships are available. Additional
criteria for this scholarship is financial need.
The Edith and Harry Darby Foundation was established to honor
Senator and Mrs. Darby. Senator Darby received his bachelor's
degree in 1917 and master's degree in 1929 from Illinois, both
in Mechanical Engineering. While at Illinois, he served as junior
councilman and then president of the Illinois Union (an organization
whose primary purpose was to raise funds for the construction
of a union building). He was also a member of Sachem and served
on several campus-wide committees. Three scholarships are available.
Susan Teegarden Morrison was an alumnae of Illinois, receiving
her bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1959 and her master's degree
in Home Economics in 1961. She was active as a student leader
in many areas, including Mortar Board, Alpha Lambda Delta, Delta
Gamma and several positions in student government. Her most distinguished
student leadership position was serving as the first female president
of the Illini Union Board. Two scholarships are available.
