The Chemical Safety Committee is an
important component in the oversight of chemical use on campus and
underscores the campus commitment to the safety and well being of
its students, faculty, staff, and the public it serves.
This Committee is advisory to the Vice Chancellor for Research through
the Division of Research Safety (DRS), on matters related to the Chemical
Safety Section, DRS. The Chemical Safety Section is responsible for
the development and oversight of programs to ensure the safe handling,
transport, use, and disposal of chemicals generated by teaching, research,
or administrative support activities. The charges of the committee
are as follows: • To consider policies and procedures
pertaining to the safe handling, transport, use and disposal of chemicals
and to recommend the adoption of appropriate new or revised policies
to the campus administration through DRS. • To interpret
regulations and/or guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency
(USEPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),
National Institutes of Occupational Safety Health (NIOSH), the National
Cancer Institute (NCI), and others pertaining to chemicals and to
provide technical assistance to DRS on these matters. •
To review proposed or enacted legislation concerning chemicals impacting
on the campus community and to inform DRS, departments, schools, and
colleges of this legislation and its potential implications.
• In conjunction with DRS, assist campus colleges, schools,
and departments with chemical safety committees or programs.
• To render advice in consideration of requests for space and
facilities for research involving chemicals. |
